WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN STANDARDS

University Identity:
The main or home page of each site must include clear identification of the University of Connecticut. The preferred method is to use the University logo. In cases where the logo may conflict with a particular design, the use of the words "University of Connecticut" is acceptable.

Linking to Home Pages:
There must be an easily identifiable link back to the University of Connecticut’s homepage: http://www.uconn.edu/ on the main page of each site.

It is recommended that individual homepages also include a link or links to the school, college and/or department with which it is affiliated. This will enhance the overall ease of navigation through the entire University web presence.

Contact Information:
The main page of each site must include information for contacting the unit as well as for reporting problems with or questions about the website. The main page and other top level pages should include the postal address, telephone and facsimile numbers, and email address of the unit, or a clearly visible link to that information. The email address of the webmaster, webmanager or site administrator also must be clearly visible as a mailto: link on these pages.

Accessibility:
All official University websites must meet State of Connecticut and Federal policies regarding the accessibility of websites.

Acceptability and Reliability of Information:
Information for display on any University website is a privilege, not a right and must meet the following criteria:
  • Information must contain no statements harmful or potentially harmful to the well being of any individual or group of individuals consistent with the student conduct code;

  • Information must be consistent with Federal, State, and University statutes and should not be in violation of any Federal or State statute or law including copyright laws;

  • Information must be consistent with University standards of ethical and moral conduct and must comply with applicable portions of: University of Connecticut Laws; University of Connecticut student conduct code; and all University computing policies;

  • Information must be from recognized departments and authorized organizations of the University for location on or linked to by UConn Web.

  • Information must be accurate and articulate. It should contain no spelling or grammatical errors and should be written in a brief, articulate manner for ease in reading;

  • Information must be timely. Out-of-date information is inaccurate and of little value. Webmasters, webmanagers and site administrators have an obligation to update their information as often as necessary to keep it accurate and useful; and

  • Information must be reliably on-line and available. Webmasters, webmanagers and site administrators have the obligation to maintain their own servers reliably and to link only to other servers that meet these criteria.

Requesting a link on the University web site:
For a new site, when requesting a link within the University website, a webmaster, webmanager or site administrator must provide the following information to the UConn webmanager:
  • URL (Universal Resource Locator) for the website;
  • hardware system to be used;
  • name of the web site;
  • names and contact information for the site "owner" and site administrator.
In addition, Webmasters, webmanagers and site administrators should be aware of the Guidelines for Unit/Departmental home pages and subscribe to the wwwadm-l listserv. To subscribe to the list send your request to the University's UConnWeb Manager.
